Ep.71 Metacognition and Metatalk with Darrell Becker(Anarcho-Yakitalism Podcast)

Darrell Becker returns to build off the methods of Non-Violent Communication and the Trivium, now we’re looking at the way we think and the way we talk in a little more depth. Here are the methods and notes Darrell and I talked about:

Metacognition is “cognition about cognition”, “thinking about thinking”, or “knowing about knowing”. It comes from the root word “meta”, meaning beyond. It can take many forms; it includes knowledge about when and how to use particular strategies for learning or for problem solving.
“Meta-writing” is writing about writing. “Meta-singing” is singing about singing. “Metatalk” is talking about communicating – i.e. cooperative discussion between partners about their shared communication process.

When I listen to others, and when I’m writing or working to recap what I’ve said or written, I look at mostly 5 components:
1. Claims being made (by whom?)
2. Supportive evidence connected or referenced to each claim.
3. Concerns being written or spoken (by whom?), explicitly or implicitly.
4. Supportive evidence connected to those conerns.
5. Actions being advocated or suggested (by whom, actions completed by which individual(s) or groups?).

I look to see attitudes:
1. Is there an attitude of curiosity and wonder, looking to discover more than what was initially known? (The Discovery Perspective)
2. Is there an attitude of extreme confidence in certain pieces of knowledge, wherein questioning the sources or supportive evidence isn’t acceptable to someone?
3. What are the ephemeral levels of respect going on, within and between each communicating individual?
